OSHA is responsible for setting up standards that are designed to help improve safety and reduce accidents. These regulations cover a wide range of materials and situations and have expanded over the years as the industry matures. One area of concern for OSHA is how hazardous materials are handled, transported and disposed of. To help regulate this area, OSHA established certain standards for hazardous waste operations called hazwoper for short.

The regulations set out by Hazwoper must be followed by any individual or organization that hazardous materials. And those organizations or individuals must go through a certification program. A Hazwoper course has been developed to provide the necessary knowledge and training to anyone requiring hazwoper certification. There are several levels of this course available depending on the individuals degree of involvement with the hazardous material. Much of the material is similar in each of the classes but some classes contain more detail than others.

The simpler hazwoper course is the 8-hour class that is also used as a refresher to meet the yearly recertification requirements. It covers all aspects of interacting with hazardous waste including detection, identification and cleanup. There are modules on toxicology to help someone determine the origin of the waste as well as basic treatment for exposure to certain materials.

The longer 40 hour course goes into great detail on the handling procedures of hazardous waste material and how to properly cleanup and dispose of hazardous waste. This course should be taken by those individuals that work with hazardous materials on a daily basis. The course is also a requirement for many emergency responders to provide them with the proper training in order to understand how to safely dispose of any accidental spills or improper handling of materials.

Both the Refresher course and the OSHA 40 Hour Hazwoper course are available online and through instructor-led classroom training. The online courses have become extremely popular recently as they allow students to take the course on their own time and set their own schedule. The online 40 Hazwoper Hour course and the 8 Hour refresher course saves employers money as there is no time away from home, no travel expenses or down time. No matter whether you take an online course or a classroom course, you must pass an end of class exam that will then provide you with a certificate of completion which is required in most states.

Once you have completed the OHSA 40 Hour Hazwoper training you only need to take the refresher course each year in order to maintain your certification and meet the OSHA guidelines. By taking each of these course, the employee will ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and feel safe that they are properly trained on how to best handle hazardous materials.
